PHOENIX – A 20-month-old boy drowned in a backyard swimming pool Thursday morning.

The boy's mother called 911 after finding him in the pool at their home near 79th Avenue and Camelback Road in Phoenix.

She had already pulled the boy out of the water when police and firefighters arrived.

The boy was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Phoenix police Sgt. Jon Howard said the boy's mother left him in front of the TV for a few moments. She went back to check on him and found that he had gotten out the back door and into the pool, which has a fence around it.

"How he managed to navigate around or over or through the fence will be part of the investigation," Howard said.

Police do not know how long the child was in the pool before he was found.

Older siblings who live in the home were not there at the time.

Police are reminding parents to always watch their children around water.

"The family did appear to have some of the normal barriers in place, but it doesn't ... substitute for constant and adult supervision," Howard said.
