PHOENIX – An inmate who was critically injured in a brawl at Towers Jail Sunday night has died.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Sergio Antonio Aguilar, 51, was on a respirator at St. Joseph's Hospital until early Tuesday morning.

According to sheriff's jail crimes investigators, the fight began over a commissary issue but quickly escalated into a racially divided brawl involving multiple inmates inside the housing unit.

Arpaio said Aguilar fell to the ground and lost consciousness after being punched in the face by one or two other inmates.

Sheriff's detectives have identified Tavaughn Jamal Scott, 18, as one of the suspects in this case.

This investigation is ongoing to determine charges against those responsible.

The sheriff's office has not released video of the fight.

The jail is located near Durango Street and 31st Avenue in Phoenix.
