PHOENIX – A Phoenix couple were able to escape from their burning home after waking to flames only feet from where they slept.

When firefighters arrived at the home near Northern and 31st avenues around 4 a.m. Monday, the couple were already outside waiting for them.

Firefighters said there were huge flames shooting from the back of the house.

"It started on the back patio and extended up to a two-story loft and into the back bedroom areas," said Capt. Troy Crawford of the Phoenix Fire Department.

The husband managed to get his wife out of the home then grabbed a few important belongings and pulled his 1946 Chevrolet pickup truck out of the garage.

The home suffered significant damage.

Crawford said the home had working smoke detectors. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
