PHOENIX -- It was slow and go on Interstate 10 as people headed out of town or to Phoenix International Raceway Saturday morning.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety shut down the westbound lanes to investigate a fatal collision, forcing everyone to exit at Avondale Boulevard. A man was hit and killed by a truck.

This all started at around 3:30 a.m.

DPS said they got a call from family members worried that their loved one, 28-year-old Gilbert Gutierrez, was depressed and wanted to kill himself.

Moments later, more calls came in, this time from people saying a man had just been hit by a semi-truck on the I-10.

DPS said Gutierrez ran right onto the highway and into oncoming traffic. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The interstate ended up being closed for more than five hours as DPS investigated.
