GILBERT, Ariz. -- Gilbert is starting off their annual Gilbert Days celebration a week early with their Gilbert Days Pony Express ride tradition Friday.

Around 26 riders will be delivering mail by horse in honor of the Pony Express mail delivery from 1860 to 1861.

Each rider is officially sworn in using the original verbiage from 1860.

"I think that these traditions are what makes a town so endearing. It creates a personality," Gilbert Days volunteer Julee Brady said. "In the days of e-mail that takes a second, we're celebrating mail that took months to get to each other."

This event kicks off Gilbert Days, which will start next weekend on Friday with the Gilbert Rodeo.
