MAYER, Ariz. -- Yavapai County authorities said a Maricopa man was fatally shot Sunday afternoon during what is being called a road rage incident.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, Paul Ries, 50, was shot after a two-vehicle collision on state Route 69 in Spring Valley, which is southeast of Mayer.

Ries was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The 59-year-old shooter was interviewed and released pending completion of the investigation.

Witnesses indicated the two drivers were in some type of traffic dispute while driving south on Highway 69. Ries, driving a white Chrysler 200 sedan, apparently confronted the other man driving a silver Toyota Tacoma truck on the side of the road following a collision, according to YCSO spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn.

Deputies recovered a handgun.

The identities of the men have not been released.

D'Evelyn said detectives are seeking witnesses to the incident.
