VALLEYWIDE -- If you have a spare $1, you can easily make a difference for Valley families in need this holiday season.

3TV and Fry's have teamed up once again for the

Gift of Giving Holiday Food Drive

. The annual effort kicked off Monday.

"We are honored to partner with 3TV and be able to help the hungry here in Arizona," Fry's spokeswoman Pam Giannonatti told 3TV's Heidi Goitia. "The need is desperate."

Fry's has made it super easy for you to get in on the giving.

Not only can you pick up nonperishable food items and leave them in the donation bins at any Fry's Food Store, you also can add a monetary donation to your grocery bill when you check out.

Scan cards worth $1 and $5 are available at every register. That money will go to buy food for the Valley's strapped food banks.

There also are $10 Gobble Give cards. Each one is a turkey for the Salvation Army.

Your kids can get involved, too, by helping fill the stores' coin canisters.

"They're at each register," Giannonatti explained. "Have them get the coins out of their piggy bank and bring them in and donate to feed the hungry here in Arizona."

If you prefer to donate food, you can do that, too.

"The food banks are always looking for high-protein items," Giannonatti said.

The most-wanted items include:

  • Cereal (boxes and bars; whole grain, low sugar),
  • Canned fruits and vegetables,
  • Rice,
  • Beans (canned or dried),
  • Pasta,
  • Tuna (canned of vacuum-packed),
  • Canned soups, stews, chilis and pastas,
  • Juice (canned or boxed),
  • Peanut butter.
