PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona officials say more Arizona students are engaging in some type of substance abuse.

Survey findings say roughly one-third of 48,000 students in grades 8, 10 and 12 admitted to using alcohol, tobacco or other drugs in the last month.

More than 75 percent of these students reported friends as being the biggest source for obtaining marijuana and prescription drugs.

The number of youth who got marijuana through a medical marijuana cardholder rose from 11.6 percent in 2012 to 14.3 percent.

The findings are reported in this year's Arizona Youth Survey conducted last spring. The survey provides authorities with information on substance abuse, school safety and anti-social behavior.

The Arizona Criminal Justice Commission says the survey provides state and local policymakers with valuable data.
