PHOENIX -- Sheriff Joe Arpaio testified at a hearing about Mickey the pit bull’s status calling him an "exemplary inmate" Thursday.

The pit bull now lives in Arpaio's "animal safe haven" at the First Avenue Jail.

Mickey bit and seriously injured a 4-year-old boy who came in to his yard and took his bone earlier this year.

Since the legal fight began over the incident, Mickey has been in the sheriff's custody.

The dog was going to be euthanized but the judge ordered he be de-fanged and neutered instead in March.
