Tempe police K-9 dies during trainingPosted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. – A K-9 with the Tempe Police Department died during training Wednesday night.
Ten-year-old Deuce collapsed while participating in training with his handler and other members of the K-9 unit, according to Lt. Mike Pooley.
Officers rushed Deuce to a local animal hospital, but staff members were not able to revive him. It is unknown what caused his sudden death.
The German shepherd was involved in patrol/apprehension work and narcotics detection.
Pooley noted Deuce's distinctive look and demeanor.
"Oftentimes, just a stare and a bark from him would get criminals to give up," he said.
Pooley said the dog was a valued member of the organization and had a drive and desire to please his handler and family at all times.
"Though Deuce will no longer be physically present, his contributions and memory will forever be a part of the success and history of our organization," Pooley said in an email to 3TV. "His protectiveness, work ethic, and loyalty are all qualities which will be deeply missed."
