MESA, Ariz. – Mesa police have released the name of a 26-year-old man found dead after a condominium fire last week.

Firefighters discovered the body of Maciver St. John McLeod inside his condo near Rio Salado Parkway and Alma School Road Friday morning.

An off-duty fire captain noticed the smoke and flames while on his way home from work and made entry into the unit, according to Mesa Fire Department spokeswoman Larissa Dvorak.

"There was lots of smoke, lots of flames," Dvorak said. "He was able to evacuate all of the adjacent apartments."

Crews put out the fire and found the victim in the second-story bedroom.

"Because of the suspicious nature of the fire, both Mesa fire and police departments are involved in the investigation," said Detective Esteban Flores of the Mesa Police Department.

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to call police at 480-644-2211 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
