Chandler police officer dies in a traffic accidentPosted: Updated:
CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities say a Chandler police officer has died in a traffic accident in Gilbert.
"Today was a tragic day for a family, for a community, and for this department when we lost Officer Bryant Holmes," says Chandler Police Sgt. Joseph Favazzo.
34-year-old Bryant Holmes was killed Tuesday afternoon in a crash while he was headed to work.
"It's never a good feeling when we lose one of our people, and this is just so tragic," says Sgt. Favazzo. "We're talking about a very young officer with a young family. He was very dedicated. Five years here at the police department. He's going to be greatly missed here, greatly missed by his family."
Details of the crash weren't immediately released, but police say it occurred at the intersection of Recker Road and Baseline Road. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
Chandler police say Holmes was a five-year veteran of the department. He's survived by his wife and four children.
"This is an officer very energetic, very positive, just a great officer," says Sgt. Favazzo. "I hear a lot of positive things about him all around from these officers here today. A family man, worked extra duty whenever he could to make extra money to support his family and provide for them."
Police say funeral services are pending.
"Right now here in Chandler, we are really focusing on working with the family," says Sgt. Favazzo. "We have an officer with the family who will work very closely with the family, and starting tomorrow we will try to tonight to absorb what has happened."
