MESA, Ariz. -- A man who stole a Mesa city truck is in the hospital after crashing into a light pole.

According to police, a city worker spotted a man on the ground along Longmore north of Southern Avenue.

When the worker stopped to check on him, the man reportedly jumped up and got into the truck.

The unidentified man fled the scene but did not get far. He lost control of the truck and crashed into a pole.

The impact threw the man out of the truck. He suffered life-threatening injuries.

A witness shot cellphone video that showed the man trying to get up.

"It took awhile for him to wake up," the woman said while showing the video to 3TV's Ryan O'Donnell.

Police believe the man was either drunk or on drugs.

Nobody else was injured.
