PEORIA, Ariz. – Peoria police have arrested a man in connection with the shooting death of a woman over the weekend.

Mark Barquera, 53, is facing second-degree murder and drug possession charges.

According to police, officers responded to a home in the 11700 block of North 67th Drive Saturday morning after receiving an anonymous call that a woman had been shot and killed.

Amanda Johnston, 30, was found with a gunshot wound to her head. She was transported to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Police said Barquera, who was inside the home, admitted to shooting Johnston. He initially told officers it was self-defense, but other witnesses inside the home reported that the woman was not a physical threat to Barquera and the shooting was potentially unprovoked, according to police spokeswoman Amanda Jacinto.

Police said multiple adults, including Johnston, were staying at the home when the shooting occurred. Barquera does not live at the home but had spent the night.
