CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Authorities in Chandler say a 2-year-old girl is in critical condition after being pulled from a backyard swimming pool.

Chandler firefighters say the toddler was found in the pool Sunday morning at a home near Alma School and Elliot roads.

Police say there is a fence around the pool and it's unknown how she got past it.

The girl was taken to Cardon Children's Medical Center in Mesa.

Authorities do not know how long she was under water.

She was awake and breathing on her own when paramedics arrived, according to the fire department.
