MESA, Ariz. – One person was found dead Friday morning following a fire at a condominium near Alma School Road and Rio Salado Parkway in Mesa.

An off-duty Mesa firefighter on his way home from work noticed the fire around 9 a.m. and made entry into the condominium, according to Mesa Fire Department spokeswoman Larissa Dvorak.

"There was lots of smoke, lots of flames," Dvorak said. "He was able to evacuate all of the adjacent apartments."

While crews were fighting the fire, they discovered the male victim inside the second-story bedroom. He has been identified only as an approximately 26-year-old resident.

"He was a really good guy," said Lauren Potts. "And he was like my big brother. He didn't deserve to go out like this."

The fire is under investigation.

"We have the fire investigator who will be investigating the cause of the fire. We also have Mesa police on scene who will be investigating the death," said Dvorak.

One of the adjacent units was damaged to the point where the residents will have to find another place to live.
