PHOENIX -- A female pedestrian was killed when she was hit by a vehicle while crossing a street on Thursday night, according to Sgt. Trent Crump with the Phoenix Police Dept.

It happened at approximately 8 p.m. on McDowell Rd. near 51st Ave.

The pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk. A driver stopped for the pedestrian but a second driver changed lanes to pass the stopped vehicle. That driver struck the pedestrian.

The driver of the vehicle pulled his car into a parking lot at 52nd Drive and McDowell Rd. When he realized he had struck a person he ran from the scene and went to a nearby home.

He was located by officers and taken into custody.

The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
