PHOENIX (AP) -- Southbound Interstate 17 is partially open again on the northern fringe of the Phoenix area after being closed because of a truck fire.

The state Department of Public Safety says a tractor-trailer rig's driver pulled over to the side of the road when the truck caught fire Thursday morning. The big rig then became fully engulfed, forcing closure of southbound traffic at Pioneer Parkway.

Despite a partial reopening, ADOT says drivers should expect long delays while approaching the area or if using local roads to get around the closure.

Northbound I-17 remained open.
