TEMPE, Ariz. -- A Valley educator stands accused of having sex with a student.

Tempe Union School District officials placed Marcos de Niza math teacher and cheer leading coach Brooke Hesson on administrative leave.

The allegations have sent shock waves through this community.

The school’s principal sent a letter home to parents on Monday notifying parents that Hesson was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation for allegations of misconduct.

"A lot of us are really upset because we all really loved Miss Hesson and really loved how she taught and everything," said student April Hutchins.

Hutchins said Hesson was well respected and well liked.

"I honestly didn't believe it at first one of my friend's came up and told me and I kind of had to take a step back and all of us were really confused," Hutchins said.

There was no answer at Hesson's Mesa home on Tuesday.

According to the high school website, she is a graduate of Arizona State University and board member of the Arizona Association of Teachers of Mathematics.

Alan Painter has children in the district and although he doesn't know Hesson, he says he's never experienced something like this so close to home.

"I went to this school 20 years ago, my dad taught here for 35 years and so I have a lot of history with this school and I will continue to support it," he said. "It's just too bad something like this happened."

Hesson remains on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Tempe Police were notified.

So far no charges have been filed.
