Job fair offers thousands of positionsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - Thousands of jobs are up for grabs right here in the Valley. Dozens of big-name companies are looking to fill positions. Employers include Macy's, Fry's Food Stores and Liberty Mutual.
The companies converged at the Phoenix Airport Mariott as part of a job fair hosted by jobertising.com. More than a thousand valley area residents had more than 60 companies to which they could apply. Representatives offered insight and applications for positions in finance, insurance, manufacturing and retail, just to name a few.
Debbie Kurinabili's husband Orisi just moved here from Fiji where he was a fire dancer, not exactly something he can do in Phoenix.
"He's looking for any job he wants to work, he's worked all his life and he wants to work," said Kurinabili. After visiting several booths, Orisi learned there's plenty out there for which he is qualified.
It's also Megan Kurtz's first time at a job fair. Although she has a job, she says she's looking for something with more longevity. "I'm looking for more of a career versus a job, so I'm looking to, I guess, excel, versus stay stagnant where I am," she said. Organizers say many of these applicants already have jobs but they're looking for more packages that offer competitive medical and dental benefits.
"People that have been waiting to transition are looking around we call them a passive job seeker, so whenever they see a company they've been targeting for awhile, they'll try and go after that quietly," said Roberto Moreno with jobertising.com.
Moreno added whatever the motivation might be, the turnout at today's job fair was highly encouraging, especially for the 1,500 job seekers who attended. Many of them walked away that much closer to being employed. If you didn't get a chance to make it out to the job fair, there's still time to apply through their website at www.jobertising.com.
