GLENDALE, Ariz. – Glendale firefighters had to deal with a potentially dangerous situation when a transformer exploded while they were responding to a fire at a convenience store Tuesday morning.

Glendale Fire Department spokesman Michael Young said there was a small fire on the electrical box at a Circle K near 47th Avenue and Bethany Home Road. Crews saw a small amount of fire and smoke on the side of the store.

As the firefighters pulled up to the scene, a transformer across the street exploded and caught nearby palm trees and oleanders on fire, according to Young.

He said roofers were doing some work at the store when they removed the support from one of the electrical lines, which caused a power pole to fall and catch fire.

"It caused a ripple effect all the way across the street to the transformer and on down to the palm trees and oleanders," Young said.

Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish both fires and no one was hurt.
