PHOENIX -- Opening day for Turf Paradise is this Saturday.
This week the horses and jockeys, many of which are coming from out of town, are now taking the track and are in full training mode. Mornings are being spent doing practice runs, and 3TV's Ryan O'Donnell gave "Good Morning Arizona" viewers a behind-the-scenes look.
Vince Francia, the general manager at Turf Paradise, said the opening day atmosphere is laid back and fun, making it the perfect time for newbies to take in the action.
The minimum bet is $2.
"You have nothing more to know about horses than that you like them," he said. "You don't need to get into the serious part of handicapping with past performances. ... It could be that the horse winked at you, and that's good enough to put your $2 down. That's how opening day is -- very friendly, very relaxed."
