APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. -- A car went over a cliff just east of Tortilla Flat on Wednesday and the driver was able to climb his way out of a canyon then call for help from a saloon, according to authorities.

The man walked into a saloon on state Route 88 Friday morning and said he was in an accident and that his vehicle was on its roof in the bottom of a canyon, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The man said the collision occurred two or three days prior on SR88 between Box Canyon and Tortilla Flat. He somehow was able to get himself out of his vehicle, hike up the mountain then walk miles down to the restaurant/saloon and ask for help.

The Rural/Metro Fire Department said the man's black Nissan Sentra was found mangled on the Fish Creek canyon floor, about 300 feet off the roadway.

"This vehicle was in a place where nobody either noticed it or did anything about," said Colin Williams with the Rural Metro Fire Dept.

The man was transported to a Mesa hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

"Based on information we have reason to believe that those injuries were pretty serious at the time," said Williams. "Lucky to be alive. Lucky to obviously self-extricate and make his way to these businesses."

Tortilla Flat is located northeast of Apache Junction.
