TEMPE, Ariz. -- Police are searching for the person who was driving a car packed with drugs as he led officers on a high-speed chase early Friday morning.

That chase came to an end when the car flipped over as the driver sped off Interstate 10 at Elliot Road. The car caught fire. Smoke was still billowing from it when crews loaded it onto a wrecker.

A Department of Public Safety officer first spotted the car on westbound I-10 near Wild Horse Pass. The driver was swerving in and out of lanes and erratically speeding up and slowing down.

The DPS officer initiated a traffic stop. At first it looked like the driver was going to comply, but then he hit the gas. He fled, hitting speeds of nearly 120 mph.

The driver apparently lost control as he tried to exit the freeway at Elliot Road.

When officers got to the car, they discovered more than 120 pounds of marijuana packaged and wrapped in burlap. The driver, however, was nowhere to be found.
