TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities say a Mesa man is in custody in connection with sex abuse and burglary case in Tempe.

Tempe police say 20-year-old Nathan Whipple was arrested for trespassing last Friday.

During an interview, police say Whipple admitted to breaking into a woman's Tempe apartment through an unlocked door on March 27 and sexually abusing her before she woke up.

The victim yelled and chased him through the complex before confronting him in the garage.

The woman ran back to her apartment and called police, but the suspect fled before officers arrived.

Police later circulated a composite sketch of the suspect.

Whipple is being held in the Tempe City Jail on one count each of sexual abuse and second-degree burglary.

It was unclear Monday if he has a lawyer yet.
