Mexican man held in Yuma jail on drug charge diesPosted: Updated:
YUMA, Ariz. (AP) -- A Mexican man being held in a Yuma jail on a drug charge is dead.
Authorities say it appears to be a suicide, but the case remains open pending autopsy results.
Officers at the Yuma County Detention Center say 28-year-old Jose Ramos-Aburto was found dead in his cell around 10:15 a.m. Sunday.
They say it appears Ramos-Aburto asphyxiated himself with a bed sheet, which was tied to a bed post.
Ramos-Aburto, from Algodones, Mexico, was the only occupant of the cell.
He had been booked into jail Saturday by federal authorities on suspicion of one felony count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
Authorities say Ramos-Aburto was in possession of about 16 pounds of methamphetamine that had an estimated value of $128,000.
