FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – A Flagstaff school was put on lockdown Monday after a student brought a gun to campus, according to police.

Sgt. Margaret Bentzen with the Flagstaff Police Department said the juvenile was dropped off at the Basis Charter School in the 1700 block of North Gemini Drive but did not go to class.

Officers were called to the school after the student's parents discovered that their unloaded handgun was missing from their home.

Police searched the school but did not find the child.

Bentzen said shortly after police completed a search, staff members heard footsteps on the roof. The school initiated a lockdown after staff believed it to be the missing student.

Officers and staff members found the juvenile on the roof. Officers took the student into custody and recovered the missing handgun.
