PHOENIX  -- October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. One of the newest ways to flight back against the disease is by getting a 3D mammogram instead of a 2D mammogram.

So what's the difference? Dr. Linda Greer from John C. Lincoln Breast Health and Research Center says the 3D version is simply better. "It's much better," she says. "We've done studies that show it."

She showed us examples of 2D and 3D mammograms. "When we look at a 3D mammogram, we're looking at your breast one millimeter at a time."There's no issue of superimposed tissues blocking your vision, because you're looking at it one slice at a time."

But the 3D is not always available for everyone. "Not everyone has it," says Greer. "And it is a very expensive technology for us to purchase. But it is so much better."

Early detection is also key in battling breast cancer.

Cancer survivor Paula Miller shared her experience with 3D mammography.
