Forest service officer involved in shooting near Mogollon RimPosted: Updated:
CLINTS WELL, Ariz. -- A person was killed in a shooting involving a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer Friday afternoon, according to the Coconino County Sheriff's Office.
Forest service spokesman Brady Smith said the shooting happened after the officer contacted a person near the Mogollon Rim in the Coconino National Forest.
The Coconino County Sheriff's Office said the officer, who was not injured, called 911 around 2 p.m. from the Blue Ridge area to report the shooting.
According to the sheriff's office, the injured person was transported to Payson Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead. The person's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The events leading up to the shooting are under investigation.
Smith said the forest service is cooperating with investigators from the sheriff's office and the FBI.
No other details were released.
