Phoenix police ID victim, suspect in fatal shootingPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Police have released more information about a fatal shooting in Phoenix Tuesday night.
Officers heard gunshots as they were responding to an armed robbery in the area of McDowell Road and 49th Street at approximately 8 p.m.
They located a gunshot victim at Willetta and 50th streets. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have identified him as Juan Guerava-Martinez, 21.
Police said Guerava-Martinez was on his cellphone outside when he was shot. The victim made his way back to his apartment where he collapsed.
Police said Guerava-Martinez was well-liked in the community.
Witnesses saw the suspect with a gun running northbound from the scene. Officers took him into custody in an alley a short time later.
The suspect has been identified as Stanley Brown, 21.
Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said Brown is accused of trying to rob a 36-year-old woman in the same area prior to the shooting of Guerava-Martinez.
The woman told police that she was on her cellphone outside of her apartment near Portland and 49th streets when she noticed a man walking near her. He suddenly pulled out a gun, pointed it at her and demanded money.
Crump said when the woman told the suspect that she did not have any money, he demanded that she take her clothes off and attempted to get her back to her apartment.
As the suspect forced the woman back to her front door, she was able to fumble with the lock, which allowed her to run inside. She locked herself inside the apartment and called police.
Brown faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping, armed robbery and possession of a dangerous drug.
