PHOENIX (AP) -- A Gilbert couple is facing child abuse charges after their daughter was injured while they were disciplining her for smoking marijuana.

Maricopa County prosecutors say Davinder Singh, 44, and Trishanjit Kaur Singh, 43, were arrested Friday. It's unclear if either has a lawyer yet.

Their 17-year-old daughter told police she was smoking marijuana in her bedroom Sept. 10 when Davinder Singh smelled it and came to her room.

The teen says her father told her mother to search the daughter's duffel bag for drugs and then he allegedly slapped, punched and kicked her.

Trishanjit Singh allegedly took her daughter into a bathroom and beat her with a plastic massage stick.

According to court paperwork, the teen told police she blacked out for a moment, and woke up to her mother beating her.

Those documents indicate that Trishanjit Singh told police that she hit her daughter with the stick, but she did not see her husband touch the teen. Davinder Singh denied that he hit the girl in any manner.

Trishanjit Singh also told investigators that her husband walked into the bathroom while she was in there with the teen. He denies that, as well.

Police say there were at least eight bruises on the teen's body. She also suffered a sprained right arm.
