Tailgate Tasters & Dude Food for Football Season

Posted: Updated:

Football season has arrived and both of my guys (my 16-year-old son and hubs) are deep into the season cheering for the Texas Longhorns (our college alma mater) and the Arizona Cardinals.  Go Cards!  And my guys want to have friends over, so here are a few easy recipes and dude food ideas for your next football gathering or tailgating party.  And I even snuck in one healthy chip dip recipe, so take a look...

First of all, the football party decor I show came from Party City.  When I shopped there, a lot of the specific team decorations was sold out, but the cashier told me that one good thing about having generic game day decor is that it can be used again for a Super Bowl party.  Good point.

Now let's start with my favorite dip that I've seen numerous recipe variations for online.  I first tasted this mouthwatering and crowd pleasing Cowboy Caviar dip at a party several years ago.  I like the recipe that the hostess gave me better than any others that I've seen.  This is also healthy with nutritious ingredients like avocado, tomatoes, black eyed peas, olive oil and more.  Here is the recipe that will have the gals and guys loving every bite...

Cowboy Caviar Chip Dip

What You Need:

•1 (11 ounce) can of white shoe peg corn, drained

•1 (15 ounce) can black eyed peas, drained

•2 -3 roma tomatoes

•2/3 cup fresh cilantro, chopped

•1 -2 avocado

•1/3 cup green onion, chopped

Dressing

•1/4 cup olive oil

•1/4 teaspoon garlic (minced, chopped, whatever)

•1/8 teaspoon black pepper

•1/4 cup red wine vinegar

•1 teaspoon cumin

What You Do:

1. Mix all dressing ingredients together and set aside.

2. Mix all veggies together in a large bowl.

3. Add dressing and mix together well.

4. If you can, give the mixture an hour or so for the flavors to really come out, but it can be served right away, too.

Serve with a multigrain chip for a more nutritious dipper.  I like the Tostitos Multigrain Scoop chips because that kind of chip can easily scoop this kind of dip.

Easy Football Themed Food Ideas

*Football Strawberries - Dip washed strawberries with stem attached into melting chocolate and let harden.  The Wilson Candy Dips is an easy brand to work with.  Then once the chocolate has formed and is dry, decorate the chocolate covered strawberry with melted white chocolate and draw in lines to form the face of a football.  See the segment to see my finished football strawberries.  Easy and fun to do plus this is a delicious treat that everyone will love.  These can also be popped onto cake pop sticks to make strawberry pops.

*Football Deviled Eggs -- Make your favorite deviled egg recipe and then simply top each egg with thin pieces of sliced chives to form the lines that makes a football.  Cute and tasty.

*Cupcakes -- Make a platter of cupcakes.  Cover half of the baked cupcakes completely with green icing piped on to look like grass and the other half of the baked cupcakes with brown icing and white icing to look like footballs.  Place on platter with one grass cupcake placed next to a football cupcake and arrange the entire platter in this every other cupcake order to make a cute presentation.

*Football Sugar Cookies - Make sugar cookies dough and shape like a football.  Then make football line impressions in the uncooked cookie, sprinkle on sugar sprinkles in a brown or gold color and bake.  Fun!

*Stadium Crowd Cookies - Make sugar cookies shaped like squares.  Cover 3/4 of cookie with green icing and fill in the remaining 1/4 (end of cookie) with white icing.  Fill in the white iced part of the cookie with the multi-colored round sprinkles that are also called nonpareils. This will look like a crowd in a stadium, which is so fun.  Then pipe in five straight white lines of white icing or melted white chocolate that run vertical from the crowd over the green icing to give the illusion of a football field.  Then write the number 50 twice, on opposite ends to show the 50 yard line.  See the segment to see the example.  I love this idea that I found on a blog called www.withsprinklesontop.net.  Great fun and festive idea!

Easy & Fun Football Dude Food Basket Idea

Here is an idea if you don't want to make anything, but still want to put snacks out for the guys watching football.  Make a dude food basket with favorite snack foods that guys dig.  Fill it with beef jerky, corn nuts, sunflower seeds, Strong & KIND bars that have bold flavors that guys dig like Honey Mustard, Roasted Jalapeno and Honey Smoked BBQ.  Plus these bars are packed with 10 grams of protein and are gluten free and non GMO.  The protein in the KIND Strong & KIND bars are made with whole almonds, seeds and pea protein to give your guy 10 grams of natural protein and all nine essential amino acids.  Check out the complete list of these cool new bars at www.kindsnacks.com. They are sold at Target and are coming to Sprouts Farmers Market stores in early October.
