PHOENIX -- Police say Michael Gonzales, 39, shot and killed himself after he shot a woman inside a home in an apparent case of domestic violence.

Sgt. Steve Martos said officers responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment near 28th Street and Camelback Road on Sunday afternoon and found Gonzales and a woman in her 40s with gunshot wounds.

The female victim has survived her injury and spoke with detectives about the incident on Monday.

Police say the couple's children weren't at home at the time of the shooting.

Police are not searching for any outstanding suspects.

The name and age of the wounded woman hasn't been released yet.

Phoenix Police Lt. David Laslevic is encouraging people to seek help before domestic violence escalates.

"It's just important that we're all aware of the various situations, and if you have a family member that has a situation, that has issues, you need to seek the appropriate counseling and so forth," he said.
