PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are investigating whether a man and woman wounded by gunfire were involved in a domestic violence situation.

Sgt. Steve Martos said officers responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment near 28th Street and Camelback Road Sunday afternoon and found a man and woman in their 40s with gunshot wounds.

Martos said no one else was inside the home, and police are not searching for any outstanding suspects.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Tony Mure said the man was in critical condition and the woman was stable. They were taken to a local trauma center.

Phoenix Police Lt. David Laslevic is encouraging people to seek help before domestic violence escalates.

"It's just important that we're all aware of the various situations, and if you have a family member that has a situation, that has issues, you need to seek the appropriate counseling and so forth," he said.
