PHOENIX -- One person was killed and another is in critical condition after an early morning shooting in south Phoenix, according to police.

Sgt. Steve Martos said officers found two males with apparent gunshot wounds after responding to a call of shots fired just after 1 a.m. Sunday. They were found inside an SUV near 19th Avenue and Vineyard Road, north of Baseline Road.

One victim, 27-year-old Mariano Leon, was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was taken to a hospital with life-altering injuries, Martos said.

Police believe at least two others were involved in the shooting and that the victims also fired shots.

The victims have not been definitively identified.
