PHOENIX -- Police are searching for the person who shot a man and then fled on a bicycle early Friday morning.
It happened just after 2:30 a.m. near 24th Street and McDowell Road. Police said the wounded man stumbled into a nearby Circle K. The clerk called 911.
The victim, a man in his 30s, was shot in the face. Investigators said he is lucky to be alive. The shooter used a small-caliber gun. According to police, the victim was sleeping behind a low brick wall in front of a carpet company when the suspect, who was riding a bike, approached him.
It's not clear what happened or what was said, but the two got into a scuffle that ended when the suspect pulled out a gun and fired. Police said the bullet went into the victim's mouth and exited through his right cheek near his ear.
The suspect fled west on his bike.
The victim headed the opposite direction to the Circle K. His condition was not immediately available, but police said he was conscious and talking when they arrived on the scene.
At this point, police do not know what precipitated the shooting, nor do they have any information about the suspect.
