ORACLE JUNCTION, Ariz. -- A 76-year-old woman died after she and her husband tried to cross a flooded wash in Pinal County on Monday.

The couple attempted to cross Cadillac Wash from Suizo Road near Oracle Junction when their vehicle began to float down the wash, according to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.

While on the line with a 911 dispatcher, the man said their vehicle was beginning to take on water. A short time later, both got out of the vehicle and the man made it to the shore.

The woman, who was not able to swim, was swept away by the current.

Deputies and officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety began searching the wash and its bank. They found the couple's Honda Accord approximately one-quarter mile down the wash.

The PCSO helicopter spotted the woman near the edge of the river a short distance farther down the wash. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The husband said he noticed the water but thought he could drive through it, according to Sheriff Paul Babeu.
