PHOENIX -- A man is in extremely critical condition after being struck by a car in Phoenix early Sunday morning.

Phoenix police found a 32-year-old man lying injured on Broadway Road near 59th Avenue around 1 a.m.

A 20-year-old woman was reportedly driving a 2009 Cadillac east on Broadway Road when she struck the man, who was walking in the middle of the road.

She told police she thought she hit an animal or someone had thrown a rock at her vehicle.

After going home and inspecting her windshield, the woman and her parents returned to the scene and cooperated with officers, police said.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash, and no charges are pending.

The man was taken to a hospital and is not expected to survive. Police are not releasing his name.
