TEMPE, Ariz. -- Tempe police arrested a man Saturday who allegedly robbed a bank and assaulted an officer.

Police were called to an armed robbery at the US Bank inside Safeway near Elliot Road and McClintock Drive around 11 a.m.

Witnesses said a man passed a note demanding money and fled the store. No weapon was seen, according to police.

A responding officer contacted 25-year-old Robert Swann, who matched the suspect description, in the area.

Swann allegedly struck the officer multiple times in the ribs and abdomen.

Other officers took Swann into custody and reportedly found the stolen cash in his possession.

The injured officer was transported to a hospital but is expected to be OK.

Swann was booked into Tempe City Jail on charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault on an officer and resisting arrest.
