FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) -- A former Arizona Department of Corrections employee is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder after his mother was found fatally shot in the Florence home they share.

Florence police say 41-year-old Alexander A. Santiago also is facing charges of second-degree murder and aggravated assault with special circumstances.

He was ordered held without bond after his initial appearance Friday in Pinal County Superior Court.

Police say Santiago was in the department's parking lot Thursday morning and said he needed to be arrested because he had shot somebody.

Officers went to his home and found 61-year-old Sean M. Lafitte dead with a gunshot wound to the head.

Santiago had been a corrections officer since May 2011 at the state prison in Florence. A DOC spokesman says Santiago resigned Thursday night.
