Phoenix man who killed nephew gets life in prisonPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- A Phoenix man who pleaded guilty to killing his young nephew nearly two years ago has been sentenced to life in prison.
Maricopa County prosecutors say 26-year-old Manuel Antonio Gonzalez isn't eligible for parole under his plea agreement.
In July, Gonzalez pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the October 2012 death of 22-month-old Xavier Bacerra Martinez.
Phoenix Fire Department crews responded to a drowning call at a home and found the toddler hurt, but said his injuries didn't appear consistent with a drowning.
The boy was transported to a hospital, where he died.
Gonzalez told authorities he was watching his two children and his nephew. He said Xavier was playing with a hose and drowned in a puddle of water.
Authorities said the injuries were more consistent with child abuse.
