PHOENIX -- We’re expecting a surge of moisture into Arizona this weekend and early next week. As a result, we can expect a big upswing in the number of thunderstorms statewide.

By Sunday night, there is a possibility for some heavy rain to develop around metro Phoenix and last into Monday.

Right now, some weather models are showing up to 2 inches of rain is possible in some Valley locations by Tuesday morning, but that may be on the high side for most areas. A range of 1-2 inches seems a more conservative estimate with the possibility of isolated areas picking up more than that.

That’s pretty normal when we’re dealing with thunderstorms. One area can pick up a lot of rain and then just down the street, there might not be much rain at all.

High temperatures are also expected to drop into the 90s by Sunday and stay there for much of next week. Low temperatures are also expected to be in the low 70s.

Right now, the chances for rain look like this:

Saturday night: 40 percent

Sunday: 40 percent

Sunday night: 60 percent

Monday: 60 percent

Monday night: 40 percent
