New ice installed for Coyotes at arenaPosted: Updated:
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- It's out with the old, in with the new in Glendale. After a name change from Jobing.com Arena to Gila River Arena, a lot of other things are being changed there, too, including the ice.
Crews began replacing the ice at the arena early Thursday morning. The new ice will be fresh and ready for the Coyotes to start their 2014-15 NHL season. Rookie Camp begins September 12 and Veterans Camp begins September 18.
"Once a year we take our cart out there and build up some ice," says J.J. Straker, Coyotes head ice technician. "Of course we have to paint everything. What you see here is not what you see on game night."
It's not a speedy process. "It will be the majority of the day before we get everything put down," says Straker. It should be done by evening, and people can skate on it in a few days.
Crews actually use yarn to help them paint straight lines. "We string the yarn across ice so we get a straight line and we'll paint in between the lines," says Straker.
The new ice isn't the only new thing fans will find at the Coyotes games this year. Improvements are being made to concession stands, where food and beverage options will be expanded. And the Fanatics team store will be remodeled. The Coyotes are also renovating the team’s dressing room and have added a new corporate office for staff.
