Governor seeking federal aid for New River, Laveen

PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has requested federal disaster assistance for Maricopa County in the wake of last month's flash floods in the towns of New River and Laveen.

Brewer sent a letter Wednesday to the U.S. Small Business Administration, asking that the federal agency assist in the recovery for county residents and businesses affected by the floodwaters.

Her letter requests a disaster declaration to provide property damage loans for some homes and business owners west of Phoenix.

Maricopa County received rainfall on seven of eight consecutive days between Aug. 12-19.

National Weather Service meteorologists say New River received 6.85 inches of rain while Laveen got 3.97 inches.
