PHOENIX -- Labor Day weekend travelers heading to northern Arizona on Interstate 17 were delayed by heavy traffic backups Saturday due to several crashes between north Phoenix and Black Canyon City, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The delays began near a crash at the exit for State Route 74/the Carefree Highway and extended about 18 miles to where northbound I-17 was restricted to a single lane in Rock Springs, which is just north of Black Canyon City. While the crash at State Route 74 and another crash at Anthem Way were not blocking lanes, traffic was very slow as crews worked to clear the incidents.
Drivers were advised to delay their trips due to the backups or plan for extended travel times. Motorists were also encouraged to use alternate routes, including SR 87 through Payson or SR 89 through Prescott.

ADOT announced around 4 p.m. that all lanes were open and the traffic backups were gone.
