TEMPE, Ariz. -- A Tempe police sergeant caught a bicycle thief red-handed last weekend.

Melvin Crocker was arrested on suspicion of third-degree burglary and possession of marijuana.

Police said Sgt. Raj Johnson was on patrol at approximately 1:40 a.m. Saturday when he saw Crocker looking into the backyard of a home near Priest Drive and 10th Place.

Johnson conducted surveillance while waiting for other officers to respond to the area. He watched as Crocker searched around a carport and parked truck then saw him enter a nearby residential yard and emerge with a bicycle.

Officers contacted Crocker and took him into custody.

Police remind residents to lock their windows, doors and screens and to secure bicycles inside a locked garage, storage closet or outside with a locking device.
