AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- A passing police officer spotted smoke and flames coming from an Avondale home and alerted occupants who were able to get out before fire destroyed the residence.

Sgt. Brandon Busse says the officer was on patrol early Thursday morning when he noticed the fire.

According to Busse, no one in the home immediately responded so the officer broke a window and attempted to kick open the front door.

A man then came to the door, and the officer was able to get the residents outside.

Busse said the initial investigation indicates the fire may have started in the laundry room where a water heater was located.
