•When my wife and I first moved to Arizona 25 years ago, we got involved in the community by pouring beer at the Scottsdale Arts Festival.  It was a great way to meet people – and contribute to supporting what attracted us here in the first place – friendliness & a strong sense of community.  Today, we are proud to support a variety of arts & cultural organizations whose work we think is not just great – but important!  Arizona Theatre Company, Actors Theatre, Scorpius Dance – and also local social service agencies like Jewish Family & Community Services.

What were the best lessons your kids learned?
•As it turned out, I’ve worked in the nonprofit arts sector for the last 20 years; so my kids were raised to know that philanthropy wasn’t just about making a $ contribution, but about getting involved, being of service and engaging others.  They’ve accompanied me as I’ve staffed booths at countless fundraisers, festivals and community events – and I think the most important lessons learned are about having an OUTWARD focus about the community in which we live…  to understand that there are people in very different situations – and we share a responsibility to help each other.

How much of a priority is it for your family to continue giving back as the kids grow up?  How do you manage the time commitments?
•It’s always a priority – but let’s be honest and say that “giving back” suffers when our jobs, our personal finances, when the kid’s school and extracurricular activities compete.  We just have to keep remembering that giving back isn’t a time commitment to do “something else” – it’s actually about DOING the things that core to who we are and why we chose to live here.
