PHOENIX -- Two Xavier College Preparatory students appeared on the pages of Sports Illustrated recently in the magazine's "Faces in the Crowd" feature.

Khalia Lanier, a junior, has made a name for herself not only as the top volleyball player in Arizona, but one of the best in the entire country. "I was really surprised more than anything," Lanier told 3TV's Heidi Goitia. "I wasn't really in the loop with the whole process. … My coach nominated me a couple of years ago."

Madison Clarke, a senior, is a phenom on the tennis court, looking this year to win her third consecutive individual Arizona state tennis championship.

"I was excited and surprised," Clarke said. She found out about the feature as she was heading home after winning a national tournament. Clarke is still looking at colleges. She hopes to go to school in California.

Lanier, 15, committed to USC about a month ago.

It is rare that two athletes from the same school are profiled in the same issue.

Lanier and Clarke, who knew of each other but were not close friends, were featured in the Aug. 4 issue.

Located in the heart of Phoenix, Xavier College Prep has an enrollment of 1,160 students from more than 150 middle schools in the Phoenix metro area. The Gators compete in 11 AIA sanctioned interscholastic teams ports.
