PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has identified a body found Wednesday in the Arizona Canal just outside Peoria's city limits. Investigators are treating the case as a homicide.
A man who was riding his bike near 73rd Avenue and Greenway Road spotted the body and called 911 just before 7:30 a.m.
According to Amanda Jacinto of the Peoria Police Department, the cyclist pulled the man's body from the water before paramedics arrived. Emergency crews pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The victim has been identifed as Rolland Lee Tockey, 35. Detectives are trying to determine when the man died and how he came to be in the canal.
Investigators from Peoria and Glendale responded to the scene. The sheriff's office took over the investigation because the area is a county island.
Several hours after the body was found, MCSO spokesman Lt. Brandon Jones said detectives believe this to be a homicide.
According to Maricopa County Superior Court records, Tockey was arrested on assault and disorderly conduct charges in February.
